Pricing pages in this industry are designed to be difficult to compare, and that is not an accident. When the numbers are hard to line up, the cheapest looking option wins, and the cheapest looking option is rarely the cheapest one.
Rather than another comparison table that will be wrong in a month, here is a standard. Ten questions a resume builder should be able to answer plainly on its pricing page. Any tool that cannot is telling you something.
1. Is the number I see the recurring number?
A large friendly figure next to a small "then" is two prices pretending to be one. The recurring amount should be at least as prominent as the introductory one. It almost never is.
2. What is the billing interval?
Weekly billing exists in this category and is worth pausing over. A weekly charge produces a number that looks trivial and an annual total that is not. State the interval next to the price, or state the annual equivalent.
3. When is the next charge?
A specific date, shown before payment and again in the receipt. "Renews automatically" is not a date.
4. Will I be told before it renews?
An email a few days ahead of a renewal costs the company almost nothing and prevents most billing complaints. Whether a company sends one is a reasonable proxy for whether it wants you to notice.
5. Can I cancel from inside my account?
Without an email, a ticket, a chat queue, or a phone call. If leaving requires a conversation, the conversation exists to change your mind.
6. What happens to my documents if I stop paying?
Three possible answers, and they are very different: the documents remain accessible, they become read only, or they disappear. All three are defensible. Not saying which one is not.
7. Can I export my content in a portable format?
A real PDF at minimum, plain text ideally. If your writing cannot leave the platform, switching costs you the work rather than the subscription fee, and that is a price too.
8. What exactly does the free plan produce?
Not what features it has. What it produces. Can it generate a clean, unbranded document you would send to an employer, yes or no? Everything else about a free tier is detail. We went through the variations in are free resume builders actually free.
9. What is the refund policy?
In actual terms, not as a heading. "All sales final" attached to an automatically renewing subscription is a company deciding in advance that mistakes are your problem.
10. Who am I actually paying?
The name that appears on your card statement should be recognisably the product you bought. When it is a parent company or a processing entity you have never heard of, unexpected charges become unrecognisable charges, and unrecognisable charges are the ones that run for months before anyone notices.
What Good Looks Like
A pricing page meeting this standard is unremarkable to read. One price, stated once. The interval next to it. What you get, and for how long. What happens at the end. A link to cancellation that goes to a settings page rather than a contact form.
It contains no countdown timer, no notice about how many people are viewing the page, and no discount expiring in eleven minutes. Those devices exist to compress the interval between wanting and paying, which is exactly the interval in which terms get read.
Why the Bar Is This Low, and Still Not Met
Nothing above is difficult or expensive. Every item is a sentence on a page. The reason it is uncommon is that clarity at the point of purchase reduces purchases at the point of purchase, and increases them later, and most companies in this category optimise for the first number.
